Ive just seen this film..and was going to buy it..but for now am not..i would of given this 5 stars..but with some research i have found out the sequal is not going to be made!..i have not read the books like many..so i loved what i saw in the film,i thought the ending was open ended..but i knew there was 3 books..and i thought well thats ok caus the next film will follow on..and now i find out that originally the second film was due out end of 2009..but as it did not do well in the usa..it was doubtfull the sequals would get made..it made more money internationaly.but as of 3 months ago they have decided not to make any more because of the cost and hard times in the film industry.So now we need a miracle if it will happen again..i personally think if nothing is announced within nect 18 months i cant see it being made..which is a real shame..and the film will be less enjoyed without the sequals as the story is only beginning at the end of the film! The direcor of this film is hoping to bring an extended cut of this film which would be an extra 30 min! kidmon and craig have both backed this...they were hoping to release it with the trailor of the sequal on there..but this has not happend and who knows if it will..so for now i am hoping a sequal will get made..or i will end up having to buy the books...also this is a family film and the books are more grown up as this film has been edited so it can get a pg rating..if it was loyal to the book..it would get a 15.As a film the story is great..the lead.dakota is superb,as well as nicol kidman..daniel craig has a very small part in it..but u know his character is to come into it more if sequals are made.So pray for a sequal..otherwise buy the books to get the whole story...i rated this as good as harry potter and narnia films..but with no sequals in sight it becomes dissapointing.

The Oxford of the film seems small, shallow and much lighter than my own vision, and the latter point can be aimed at the entire feel of the film - the book is much darker in tone. Lord Asriel is an almost heroic, positive character on celluloid, whilst the text version is clearly more complex and has motives that are highly questionable. Similarly Mrs Coulter comes across as some sort of Cruella De Ville wannabe, with the film failing to truly capture the sense of massive betrayal Lyra feels towards her, or the feeling of horror over the crimes she is perpetrating against children. Indeed the relationship between a person and a daemon is never fully explained, and the act of intercision is so downplayed it loses much of the sense of revulsion that there is for it in the book. I was also disappointed by the simplification of the relationship between Lyra and the Gyptians, which is much edgier and less clear cut in the book, and the fact that the Gyptians have been reduced to little more than a convenient army for one side of the inevitable battle that is the grand finale. Which brings me to how irritated I was by the hacking of the plot. Whilst I appreciate that things have to be changed and moved around to fit into the two hour duration, what on earth happened to the events at Bolvangar? This represented a significant and harrowing part of the plot, but ends up being shortened to near insignificance and swapped in the timeline with Iorek's fight to regain his throne, simply to provide the film with a suitably impressive denoument. And finally, the real end of the book is dropped completely because, I assume, they felt audiences couldn't cope with a down-beat conclusion. Dumbing-down strikes again! In terms of Blu-Ray conversions, this isn't a bad one, with plenty of extras, although the quality of the film itself isn't that impressive in HD compared to upscaled DVD. I'd be very tempted to buy the two disc DVD instead.
